Share "Layer Gardening – No Need To Dig!"
One of the most arduous tasks of gardening is getting down on your knees and digging through soil that may be littered with obstructions such as rocks. Sometimes that kind of work is just too hard. Well, there is a solution for you. Instead of digging, just make your own soil on top of something. Here’s how:
Anywhere you want it
Pick a location of where you want your garden to be. It doesn’t even have to be where dirt is, you can just as easily put it on top of your driveway.
The base
Before you start creating your soil, you will need something to put it on. A highly recommended thing would be decent-sized sheets of cardboard. You should be able to find it for free at recycling centers, department stores, etc. Just be sure to ask if you can have it first.
Making the soil
On top of the cardboard is where the “magic” happens. Basically you will be putting a hodgepodge of different items on top of the cardboard much like a compost pile. Anything like grass clippings, leaves, compost, animal manure and sawdust goes. You will want to layer these items as you put them on and make sure to moisten them. Make sure to occasionally turn the pile over so everything decomposes fully.
Putting in the plants
When your pile starts to have the same consistency as soil in a few short weeks, you can start to add your plants. If you are putting in a plant, just make a small hole in the soil and fill the dirt back towards the plant. For seed, just sow them like you normally would.
